OluKai Supports 2009 Hawaii State Junior Lifeguard Championships

After two months of water safety training, over 300 qualifying kids from across Hawaii came out to compete in this year’s Junior Lifeguard Championships held August 8 at Ala Moana Beach Park on Oahu.

The clear Hawaiian air was electrified with the spirit of competition as teams from Maui, Kauai, the Big Island, and Oahu came together for the day’s opening ceremony. Anticipation rippled throughout the gathered crowd as they prepared for the five individual and team athletic events designed to showcase the skills they learned from summer training.

Contestants were cheered on by their mentors from the Hawaiian Lifeguard Association (HLA) and their peers as they battled through 5 events: 1000 meter beach run, 300 meter swim, beach flags, 100 yard run-swim-run, and an exciting paddleboard relay.

Defending 2008 Champions from Kauai claimed their sixth straight title winning 1st Place with 125 points, followed by the Big Island with 109 points, and Oahu-North Shore Division with 92 points.

OluKai is proud to support the growth of the next generation of elite watermen and waterwomen through their partnership with the HLA and its Junior Lifeguard Program. Through the program thousands of kids across the state increase their self-confidence, physical conditioning and ocean awareness through lessons in water safety, first aid and surf rescue.

The OluKai Kia’i (Guard) sandal is the official footwear of the HLA, worn by over 420 working guards patrolling Hawaii's shores. Part of the proceeds from every Kia’i sandal goes directly to the HLA and its Junior Lifeguard Program through OluKai’s ‘Ohana Giveback Program. Through the program, OluKai donates time, money, and resources to cultural and environmental preservation efforts in Hawaii.
